Many residents and visitors are talking about the recent stops on roads leading up to Crown King. Please use the Service Az, Game and Fish, County and BLM links to view the specific laws pertaining to the roads, and recreational use of the roads. It is your responsibility to know and abide by the laws and rules of these departments. If we receive further information/clarification on these laws we will post them.

Crown King Community Association Update on Sheriff’s Meeting 7/17/2010

A Community Meeting was arranged by the Crown King Community Association to allow the Yavapai County Sheriff Dept to address the situation on recent break-ins. This meeting was held on July 17, 2010 at 10:30am  by Dwight D’Evelyn & Lt. Marc Schmidt.

We have set up a plan to work directly with the Sheriff’s Dept in setting up a neighborhood watch program. We will use the current email system (the one CKCA uses to send notices and newsletters), however there will be a new email address specifically set up to receive notices from the Sheriff’s office. If you would like to be added to this email list and receive updates, including future warrant notices on the suspects on our recent break-ins (when available) please send an email with YES in the subject line to:crownkingwatch@gmail.com

All notices from the Yavapai County Sheriffs Office will come from that email address. Our system only allows for this set up if you also are signed up to receive our newsletters. IF YOU SIGNED UP AT THE MEETING ON THE CLIPBOARD, YOUR NAME HAS ALREADY BEEN ADDED. The first notice should go out soon.

Greetings from YCSO,

Thanks for a great meeting on July 17th. The Sheriff’s Office appreciates your interest in neighborhood watch and concerns regarding criminal activity in the Crown King community. I have spoken with several of you since the meeting regarding specific neighborhood concerns.

I plan to keep you updated not only on issues in Crown King, but around Yavapai County.

Some notes -

**     I have included an attachment regarding the defensive use of firearms by civilians which was recently updated. It is provided directly from the Department of Public Safety Website and provides a lot of good information. Also, please consider a concealed weapons class, even if you have no intention of carrying a firearm the information as the training is invaluable.
**    The website to check license plates is http://theftaz.azag.gov/. If it comes back stolen, PLEASE report it!
**    The YCSO website is www.ycsoaz.gov<http://www.ycsoaz.gov/>.  Remember to check media releases frequently. Subject warrant checks are also available on our site.
**    Please check www.azein.gov<http://www.azein.gov/> regarding home preparedness information, critical weather concerns, forest fire updates, statewide emergency bulletins, etc.
**    Remember to share vacation information with each other and take time to conduct routine checks. Also, make of list of any ongoing vacant homes and their owner information. Be sure to report any concerns to the homeowner right away. You can also contact YCSO and request a vacation check from deputies and our Volunteers in Protection.
**    I am in the process of ordering block watch signs for the neighborhood and will let you know when the expected installation date will be. Unfortunately, it will be a few weeks before I have new supply.
**    Don’t forget to sign up for the Emergency Notification System (ENS) available on the Sheriff’s website at www.ycsoaz.gov<http://www.ycsoaz.gov/>
**    If possible, routinely check emails from this address for the latest crime notices and information.

Again, acquaint yourselves with neighbors in your immediate area. Share vacation and away from home times trusted neighbors so they can keep an eye on your home while you are gone. Provide them with emergency contact information should someone need to reach you.

I remain in touch with Lt. Schmidt regarding the status of our property crime investigations and will keep you updated with the progress. We appreciate your patience. Many times these investigations open many other doors and the new information must be checked as it may lead to additional suspects and evidence.

Meeting Notes:
Bob Cosburn made introduction that Margaret facilitated the meeting because of
a rash of burglaries recently.

The Deputies produced a list of all YCSO calls for Crown King past 60 days.

Aside from dog complaints and suspicious person calls there were burglaries:

2300 S. Towers Mountain Road
6852 East Torpedo
6452 Loreta Road
23456 Towers Mountain Road
6913 Fir Road

(Suspicious person call at 6804 East Towers Mtn. Road.)

(Note: this did not include burglary of Fire Department and the UPS closet at the
general store mentioned later.)

(This did not include the burglary of saloon keeper Sandy Barker’s
house while she was at work last Wednesday on Sunny Slope South)

Two YCSO Deputies were present. Lt. Mark Schmidt (sic?) the Commander
for all of the South Division and Sheriff Waugh’s right hand man Media and
Community Relations Coordinator Deputy Dwight D’Evelyn.

Lt.Schmidt spoke of recent crimes handled by YCSO:

In the past four months both Crown King and Black Canyon City had serious
problems with burglaries perpetrated to fund narcotics usage. The YCSO was
able to assign a Detective to the cases. That Detective Czabo (sic) was able
to put together information allowing for the identification of many of a network
of crooks in the area. None of the suspects are known to live in Crown King.
The thefts occur at night. Vehicles used vary from motorcycles to pickup trucks.
These crooks are taking anything they can steal that a recycling scrap yard will
buy. Things as large as a backhoe have been taken. They take precious metals
(catalytic converters ?) They have used cutting torches to remove cattle guards
which are sold for scrap. Two locations that are knowingly purchasing stolen
goods have been identified. Everywhere the Detectives look they find more
individuals in the networks. They have now involved Maricopa County as the
case is developing. Warrants for arrest for thieves and the fence/buyers are
The big problem now is that the crooks know the Deputies know what is
happening so have all relocated. The YCSO does not know where the thieves
reside so are obtaining arrest warrants that can be put into the police computer
Specifically about the Crown King crime, Lt. Schmidt told that recently ‘A lot of
apparatus’ had been taken from the C.K. Fire Department. At a location not
mentioned the owner of a rental house became suspicious upon observing the
FD property, called it in, the majority of the property was recovered. A request
for arrest warrant is pending with the Prosecutor.

When warrants are obtained Deputy D’Evelyn will send e-mail notification with
copy of wanted flyers for posting in Crown King.

In the recent past an identified individual broke into the UPS storage / drop
closet. The responding Deputy did an excellent job being able to recover both
fingerprint and DNA evidence. A request for an arrest warrant is pending at
the prosecutor’s office. The male with tattoo frequented the CK bar. He stole a
package containing a box of pots and pans.

Two months ago approximately 0200 am there was an altercation in which an
individual fired a shot(s) into the air before leaving the town. The Lieutenant said
that the shift Sergeant had inappropriately decided against allowing a Deputy
to respond losing any chance of identifying the person. That officer has been
A resident living on Nelson Road complained how Deputy Mcinnis had been
assigned to handle a June 19th situation where the woman had been forced
to remove an intoxicated renter from premises. The homeowner’s insurance
company needs a police report. Repeated calls to the Deputy have resulted only
in promises that he would show up. The woman observed that now, more than a
month later, the rain has washed away some of the evidence.

The Lieutenant will review the matter. He observed that frequently there are only
two officers for midnight shift and the long time it takes to respond enters into
decisions of what police runs to assign.

Deputy Dwight D’Evelyn presented a power point show on neighborhood watch,
a program the Association and the Department are attempting to implement.
The Deputy will be helping implement an Operation Identification program where
Crown King owners can have help in marking their names (or operator license
numbers) on property as inventories of frequently stolen property is made.
Hundreds of burglars go free after police officers catch them with ‘the goods’
simply because the owners of ‘the goods’ are unable to identify the property as
theirs. This is important.

Photos of Prescott newspaper articles were shown … all of us need to pay
attention to the crooks down the hill. They will come here. Generally there are
two thugs, one a lookout and one that knocks on the door. If no answer that thug
breaks in … during daytime as well as night. None identified are known to be
There was a lot of questions about use of fatal force. Deputy D’Evelyn will be
providing a multi page document prepared by a lawyer dealing with the law and
examples of real life circumstances to better illustrate when a person may and
may not kill someone.

There is a ‘bark ordinance’ and ‘leash law’ in effect for Crown King. Our pets
must be kept under control.

The Deputy spoke of instance after instance where nosy neighbors have been
crucial to interrupting burglaries, of crimes solved when someone jots down a
vehicle description and license plate number. The Deputies indicated calls with
details of such situations should be made to the non-emergency contact number
928-771-3260 or Deputy D’Evelyn directly 928-777-7441.

From the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department web page are links to allow
citizens to make direct queries of license plate numbers to determine if there is a
want or if they are stolen.

Two web addresses of good importance are www.YCSOAZ.gov for the license
plate checks and www.AZEIN.gov which has real time updates on natural
disasters such as floods and forest fires.

The Association volunteered to handle the job of liason of Crown King residents
with Deputy D’Evelyn to establish the e-mail notification program. The Deputy
sent around a signup list to allow implementation.

Various residents gave kudos to Detective Kirk whose through investigation
recovered fingerprint evidence allowing an arrest warrant.

That resulted in kudos for Deputy Don Pritchard who ‘solved two crimes’ because
of through crime scene investigation.

We have contacted the county on this issue and presented the issue to members at the quarterly meeting. No further questions were raised on this issue. Below, the Yavapai County Laws are posted.

Leash Law now being enforced in Crown King (law has existed for some time).

Law applies throughout Yavapai County, not just in towns but everywhere.

Dogs must be fenced in or leashed at all times even on your property.

Dogs must be licensed. Can obtain at Sheriffs Substations (with proof of rabies vaccination) or from your Vet.

Historical impression was that Crown King did not want Animal Control to come up, so they didn’t unless called.

Animal Control was understaffed, now staffed up, may come up more often.

They will be happy to come up if a complaint is filed.
